Work

SW

During my time at my last job, there were only two black women there, which included myself. Everyday I would go in to work and staff members would 'mistake me' for the other black woman and call me by her name. They would say they thought that we looked similar. We look completely different. We are different skin tones, a different height and size, our hair styles are different and our facial features are not even similar. I would find myself correcting the same people everyday.

I have had experiences with Caucasian people who would say I come across as aggressive with my tone of voice. For instance, if I disagree to move to an unsafe ward because that ward is already unsafe and needs at least 2 more nurses to make the ward safe due to the acuity of patients and complex drugs. My Caucasian superiors will say I am aggressive because I refuse to go. They will force me to go to an unsafe environment threatening to put me on disciplinary if I refuse to go, putting my registration at risk. They say or are being seen as being assertive. Instead, this is bullying in the workplace. Which leads me to really assess the fine line between being aggressive and assertive.

Work

Pinkie

I worked in a predominantly white job formerly, and my white colleagues would say and do anything and get away with it. While I would be called out for standing up for myself

How Serena Williams Saved Her Own Life

MM

I once shared a post on Twitter titled "How Serena Williams Saved her Own Life" and I received this comment. "love Serena but not sure it's colour related. Sadly there are to many woman dying when giving or right after birth. Black and White I fully understand it was traumatic Serena is strong But health issues are the reason not colour"

Discrimination

Alexa

I started working at a firm a few months ago. I was the only black girl in my department. I was okay until we had a new leader. He would constantly ask me to do things he won't make anyone else do. He was selective with the type of jobs he gives me at work(they were usually, tedious) One day he asked me to do something that was not part of my assignment and no one had ever done it since I started working there. He asked me to climb a stable and clean the walls at the workplace. I told him that is not something I could do and his response was "You are from Africa you should be hardworking" I told him I am hardworking but I will not do anything that I cannot do. I was reported to the supervisor for not complying at work. I was given 2 strikes for my behavior. 3 strikes are needed to be fired. I know I am on a time bomb and any day from now I will be on my out.
